[oniro-wg] Recommendation: Support Collabora's Membership in the Oniro Working Group

Dear Oniro Working Group Steering Committee and Members,
I am writing to strongly recommend and support Collabora's application (or potential application) to join the Eclipse Foundation Oniro Working Group as a participating organization. As a company deeply committed to open source since its founding, Collabora has established itself as one of the most respected contributors in the Linux and embedded ecosystems. Their philosophy — that "free and open access to software is the only way to cope with today's rate of innovation" — aligns perfectly with the Eclipse Foundation's principles of transparency, vendor neutrality, and collaborative development that underpin the Oniro project.
Collabora excels in precisely the areas critical to Oniro's success as a modular, vendor-neutral OS platform built on OpenHarmony for global markets, smart devices, IoT, consumer electronics, and distributed systems:
  • Extensive upstream contributions to core technologies such as the Linux kernel, Mesa (graphics), Wayland (compositing and display), GStreamer (multimedia pipelines), PipeWire (modern audio/video handling), and Bluetooth — all foundational for embedded and distributed OS environments.
  • Proven expertise in graphics, multimedia, embedded Linux, and system-level integration, which directly supports Oniro's goals of interoperability, modularity, device integration, and a rich developer experience across diverse hardware and runtimes.
  • A track record of helping organizations adopt open-source methodologies, contribute code upstream, ensure license compliance, and achieve long-term sustainability — values that would strengthen Oniro's ecosystem and attract more participants.
The Oniro WG benefits from diverse, high-quality contributors who can accelerate platform maturity, expand global adoption (especially in Western/European markets via add-ons like React Native or Servo), and foster healthier competition in IoT and edge. Collabora's independence, lack of vendor lock-in agenda, and history of collaborative partnerships make them an ideal fit — much like existing members focused on Arm, industrial IoT, and open ecosystems.
Supporting Collabora's membership would:
  • Enhance Oniro's technical depth in graphics, media, and low-level system components.
  • Bring additional credibility and attract more embedded/Linux experts to the project.
  • Reinforce the WG's mission to build a truly open, global, and production-ready OS platform.
