Ok I'm now having a look at the mosquitto (broker) log and it's clear 
that the mosquitto_sub is *not* successfully connecting with 
allow_anonymous=false. The (minor) problem is that the client shows an 
error when trying to connect to a port configured for user/password, and 
no error when trying (without success) to connect to a port configured 
for TLS access. But the log reveals that it's trying.
