But it does seem like there might be enough community interest in JAXB to consider moving it ahead as an independent EE4J project and potentially an updated JESP spec (i.e., a standalone spec using the jakarta.* namespace but not included in the Jakarta EE platform spec).

There is definitely significant usage of it, but is there much interest in evolving it? If I am reading the JCP page it sounds like the last real API change was in 2008, and it was a minor one. Perhaps it’s worth waiting until someone wants to do something big with it, or until JAX-WS gets revisited and it needs to get pulled in by extension.
