Re: [jakartaee-platform-dev] No new specifications for Jakarta EE 9

This project has been set the task of coming up with a delivery plan by 9th December for the steering committee to review.

First step I would guess is analysing the dependency tree and discussing with each project from the bottom up when they can do the namespace change and release an api artefact to a staging repo. That others up the tree can use to do their namespace change. The associated TCK also has to be changed and a compatible implementation of each spec pass that new TCK.

Note for a Jakarta EE 9 platform release we also need an open source compatible implementation so one of the app servers also has to do the namespace change and pass the TCK.

Given that the content of Jakarta EE 9 is essentially a fixed quantum of work we can’t really just pick a date and slip the content to ensure we hit that date (release train model). We have to analyse what work is required and then analyse when the work can be delivered albeit that the preference from the steering committee is ASAP.

Hi,

Something like that should work indeed.

Setting the deadline / target date for Jakarta EE 9 is the important thing now. I'd love to see it being targeted at the end of January 2020, which is roughly 1 year after the important GlassFish 5.1 release.

Kind regards,

Arjan

Agreed with no new specifications being added. As for new features, I think they are ok as long as they are small enough not to slow down the Platform release.

My proposal: let's define a deadline for Jakarta EE 9 assuming no new features, but don't stop specific projects from releasing new versions. Once Jakarta EE 9 is ready, just take the latest available version of the specs.

As far as I see, none of the component technologies are ready enough anyway. They will need time to build momentum (and rebuild an active community around them that was there in the JCP).

Since we're trying to nail down the Jakarta EE 9 content before early December, I'm going to start a few separate threads to discuss the major topics.

In the post about the Jakarta EE 9 Roadmap, Ivar mentioned this statement:

·       States that no new specifications are to be added, apart from specifications pruned from Java SE 8 where appropriate, unless those specifications clearly will not impact the target delivery date.

So, let's pretend that we're entertaining some new or updated specifications for Jakarta EE 9.  Which ones are we talking about here?  I'm not looking for a "wish list", but what specification projects are ready to step up to either new or updated specs for Jakarta EE 9?  I'm looking for input from team members that activitely participating on these specifications.  For example, I've heard rumblings of an update to JAX-RS, JSON-B, and maybe JMS.  We need to figure out if these type of updates will be part of Jakarta EE 9, or move to Jakarta EE 10.

Just for giggles, let's assume the delivery date for Jakarta EE 9 is 2Q2020 -- just to put a boundary on this new/updated specificaiton discussion.
