FWIW, this has already been addressed for Eclipse Platform and Eclipse SDK via https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=471794 And what about having such a http://download.eclipse.org/releases/latest URL listed in the available software sites by default, but disabled for automatic updates? This + https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=481794 would allow user to "guess" how to enable update to latest major version if they want to, without changing the default behavior. Moreover, since the /latest URL wouldn't change between release (content changes, not UrL), it would allow to write some "universal" documentation to upgrade to latest version, instead of also requiring user to find out the name and URL of the latest release.
