[hono-dev] Eclipse Hono 0.5-M5 milestone available

today we have created milestone 5 of the Eclipse Hono [1] project.

Hono aims at providing uniform service interfaces for connecting large
numbers of IoT devices to a (cloud) back end. It will specifically support
scalable and secure data ingestion (telemetry data) as well as command & control
type message exchange patterns and provide interfaces for provisioning & managing
device identity and access control rules.

This milestone includes the following:

- An HTTP protocol adapter exposing Hono's Telemetry and Registration endpoints
via a RESTful API.
- An MQTT protocol adapter exposing Hono's Telemetry endpoint by means
of a topic hierarchy to publish telemetry data to.
- Routing of Telemetry data to downstream consumers via AMQP 1.0.

The main focus of this milestone was:

- improve general robustness and resilience regarding automatic discovery and (re-)connection to services
- improve security by opening AMQPS (TLS secured) port only by default (non-TLS port can be configured explicitly)
- update to Vert.x 3.4.0
- bug fixes

You can find a list of issues addressed here [2].

Please not that 0.5-M5 is not a drop-in replacement of 0.5-M4.
While there are not changes to Hono's AMQP based remote APIs, there have been some incompatible changes to the configuration options of the Hono server component. Please refer to the component documentation for details.

We are planning to do additional milestones every 3-4 weeks. We anticipate to do
a first release (0.5) in Q2 2017.

The artifacts are available from Eclipse Repo [3] and (later during the day) from
Maven Central [4].

However, the easiest and also the preferred way of using Hono is by means of
Docker images available from Docker Hub [5].

If you want to give Hono a try, follow the Getting Started guide on the project
web site [6].
