Thanks for your answer Jim, that's good news. In the meantime I tested some other shapefiles and noticed that the precision problem only occurs in some of them. Looks like these files were created with a tool that may have some tolerance to bad coordinates.

E.g., for the GeoMesa Spark tutorial the link points to a website with two shapefiles. The "SIMPL" version seems to have precision errors whereas the other one works fine.
