Re: [eclipsecon-na-program-committee] Shortlist proposals

Hi,

1) +1 from me for the Linux / SWT topic even though I voted only one star on that one because of the small target audience, you guys convinced me that it is important to have a core SWT talk at EclipseCon.
2) +1 accessibility should be taken more serious by the avg dev, but I fear it won't attract too many people. Alex as a speaker and Jubula as an otherwise missing topic appear to be more important for EclipseCon.
3) Given the low avg votes for the CDO talk (and the specialized topic) and the talk on Business Process Modeling (which isn't especially sexy), and given that the papyrus track also has a lot of modeling content, I suggest to drop one / or both of these two talks.
Instead I'd like to champion Jan's Talk Diagrams, Xtext and UX (please don't be afraid of Xtext in the title, he clarified that in a comment on the proposal) which he couldn't give last year for personal reasons. I'm obviously biased since I'm working with Jan, but these are the reasons why do I think this is a nice addition to the program:
 - We have a Sirius and a GEF talk, so we have already some nice content for people who are interested in graphical visualization. The technology that Jan presents takes a different approach to diagramming and could be a good complement to the more traditional ways taken by Sirius and GEF.
 - The demos that he has are a nice mash-up of Eclipse technologies. E.g. he demos how other frameworks / APIs in Eclipse can be used to explore the data in the workspace (e.g. JDT, PDE, ..)
 - Assuming that we reject Welcome to the flatland which would have covered challenges in UI design (somehow), the UX aspect of his talk may compensate for that.
 - Also assuming that we reject the Airport Congestion Management with JavaFX and Open Source, the JavaFX aspect in Jans talk may compensate for people who are interested in that technology.
 - Jan's a great speaker
 - I think it doesn't belong to the modeling track at all.

What do others think?

Best,
Sebastian

1. +1 to SWT bleeding edge talk over flatland
2. First, I agree we want Alex speaking and should try to find a way.  I'm just not in favor of replacing this one particular talk. Accessibility is an important topic for RCP developers and not as specialized as you think. At least on my team it's a general skill (like i18n and l10n) and very useful as a lens when looking at user experience.
3. If we really do have too many modeling talks perhaps we might consider substituting Alex's talk.
