[eclipsecon-na-program-committee] extended talks discussion

Hey!

This feedback about extended talks is discussed on the PC group of EclipseCon Europe at the moment. Since we might want to have a few extended talks as well, I thought it might be a good idea to share this feedback here with you:

> Great conference guys. There is one thing on my chest that I want to supply feedback on that I propose to change for next year. These are the extended talks.
>
> We had only good intentions when we created them. We wanted to give the best speakers/talks more time to speak about their topic and get feedback from their community. I think it turned quit into the opposite
> • a lot of our best talks are now in parallel on this extended talk slot
> • Attendees get frustrated because they want at least see 3 or 4 of the 7 extended slots and then as a consequence miss good content
> • Speakers dont get the attention they deserve because there is another great talk in parallel
> • Last not least I also found that a good 35 min talk does not get double as good in double the time. I went to see Eclipse Flux which is a project that I really love (Martin knows that) but I think the added benefit of the extra 25 minutes was not that extraordinary at the end. (And I missed SmartHome, Java Wearables and a Java talk from Stephan Herrmann)
> I see two options. One is drop the extended time slot. The second is to not give extended talks to the best speakers but to content that needs extra time. I got quit good feedback for the lighting talk format from the Model Symposium. So why not have next time the Modeling Symposium and the IoT Symposium and an Xtext/DSL symposium and a general Lightning Talk session. (and maybe we have to reach to find people to run these symposia)
>

What do you think for EclipseCon NA?

Cheers,
-Martin
