RE: [eclipse.org-requirements-council] Themes for July?

I would also like to add two items which Rich Main stressed in our last Board meeting. These could also make useful themes to add to the list.
  • We lack first level support for platforms other than Windows. While Eclipse as an IDE can be used on Linux and the Mac, things degrade when you try to build large scale end-user applications on these platforms. There are just too many quirks and non-native behaviors to sell a passable application on these platforms. These issues are documented in the Eclipse bugzilla database, but typically are not addressed because they do not fit the IDE use-case that certain committers seem to see as the only use case.
  • We lack fully functional Swing integration. Of course, this has been a thorny issue from day one. For the Eclipse developers, it seems like there is a perception of SWT vs. Swing. For application developers and integrators, we require SWT with Swing. As Rodney King would say, “Can’t we all just get along?” It’s time that we recognize that there are companies out there with a large investment in Swing components. They don’t want to write their whole UI in Swing – in fact, quite the opposite. They appreciate the native benefits of SWT, but need to integrate high-value Swing components when needed. We need to support this use case or we risk alienating companies who otherwise would embrace Eclipse wholeheartedly.

Subject: [eclipse.org-requirements-council] Themes for July?

All:

At Eclipse Con we discussed getting a new set of requirements, primarily theme-based, in place for July.  Below is a list I captured during our discussions and while I was filling in for Borland at the board meeting.  Perhaps these may help get the creative thoughts flowing....

Theme "Brain Dump"

  • Ease of use
  • Productivity
  • Emerging Trends (AJAX)
  • Emerging Trends (Mobile/Embedded)
  • "Coolness Factor" - how to maintain this?  It can be fleeting.
  • Design Tools
  • Vista
  • Linux
  • SWT
  • "Easy RCP"
  • Extending to be Life-cycle Platform

Question:  Does / should the Requirements Council, gather requirements from Architecture and Planning Councils?  Also the Board.  I'm not clear on how we make sure ideas are getting adequately cross-pollinated to achieve alignment of purpose.  The Board in particular seemed to have some overall goals for the foundation.  It seems like we should understandt those and see how we can support the overall goals in the themes and roadmap.
