RE: [eclipse.org-eclipsecon-program-committee] EclipseCon 2010 Part 2 - Conference Structure

I personally have never seen an interesting and engaging Unconference work.
Maybe I'm a fuddy duddy, but I really kinda like the traditional BOF setup.

Conference Structure

In my previous email, I mentioned that the conference is predicted to shrink
to a smaller size again this year, meaning that it will be a cosier affair.
We will be pulling back from the full convention centre and concentrating
the crowd into the hotel itself, making it more intimate than it has been in
the past few years.

Bjorn is out of town this week, so please hang on to your questions about
size, rooms, etc until he gets back.

You might remember me writing about *value* in my previous mail too - a
smaller conference, with an increase level of shoulder-rubbing going on,
will lead to more Interaction. Of course, just boinging off people in the
corridor is really a human Brownian motion effect and not particularly
useful unless you can capitalize on it, by providing the social equivalent
of condensation nuclei around which delegates can accrete [*]. This I've
done by increasing the number of panel sessions, and introducing an evening
'unconference' - which is basically a participant driven mini-conference
that extends our current BoF concept.

I asked Bjorn to construct a couple of model layouts, which I've attached -
have a look and send your comments.

In my next email, I'm going to write about some of the finer-grained details
of talks, panels, keynotes and the unconference.

  best regards

[*] No, I'm not thinking about the hotel bar at this stage :)
