David,
I will look into this further (of course it's Friday night here in
Portland now and these conference center people don't seem to work
24x7) but...
But, before that
happened, how much
would the registration fee have to be increased? $20?
Yes $20-$25.
Seems the error was
made in setting the price initially, so, how would similar such
forgotten
things normally be covered? I'd guess the EMO would go into "debt"
and make it up next year? (by charging $40 additional). I think that
should
be plan A.
That would be nice but seriously, I don't have the authority to
suddenly spend $25k of the Foundation's money. Just like you, I have to
get travel approval to get on an airplane for a few hundred dollars.
The EclipseCon budget is approved by the Finance committee of the
Board. We could go back to them and say "now we're going to spend $25k
here instead of on that other thing", but that's not my call - that's
up to Mike.
Oh, and it wasn't "forgotten" - it was a deliberate decision by me. You
could argue (you are arguing :-) that it was the wrong decision, but
just to be clear: there was no forgetting.
Or we could have less food (maybe no cookies in the afternoon) in
exchange for power in the tutorials. I suppose.
As plan B, I assume
you've already played
hardball with the conference organizers? ... telling them for example,
if they don't offer it to you for a reasonable price of, say, $5000,
then
a) many people will bring their own and that could cause a safety
hazard?
and b) you'll be less likely to use their services next year? And, c)
what
if you offered to buy new power strips and hire your own electricians?
Seems that could be done for $5000! Not that I would know!
You mean the convention center, of course, as I'm the organizer :-)
Anyway, (b) isn't going to happen because we use the same convention
center every year and they know it and (c) isn't going to happen
because they have an exclusive contract that prevents it and (a) might
happen, but the real problem is that there aren't enough electrical
drops. If you look at convention centers, they have these big plug
boxes in the floor and on the wall and they bring in extra boxes to
plug into those to make enough circuits for people to use. Not in all
rooms, of course, but in the larger rooms where many of our tutorials
are.
