Michael,
Although this is best hammered out within the newsgroup, are you sure that 
Eclipse is using the Sun JDK that you installed?  If it is located at 
/usr/lib/java/bin/java, what version does it say it is?  If not, have you 
tried the -vm parameter to the eclipse executable to make it use the 
correct runtime?
