Re: [cross-project-issues-dev] Juno M1 simultaneous release and Eclipse platform 3.8/4.2

Hi,

does that mean that every project that takes part in the Juno release train is required to provide a 4.2-compatible AND a 3.8-compatible version? Or is it possible to run 3.8-compatible plugins on the compatibility layer?

The tooling for RAP is still based on Eclipse 3.x. We may port it to 4.2 as well, but didn't yet start to do so.

Where can I download an 4.2M1 SDK. I don't find it on http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/.

Regards, Ralf

To echo John's comment; the Platform UI Team is completely committed to ensuring that Eclipse 4 is ready for Juno. Bugs that represent regressions against existing 3.x behavior will be treated as 'critical' by us regardless of the apparent severity. If the regression is because of the use of internals we'll gladly work with you to determine the appropriate fix.

On the plus side it's waaaay easier to find / fix defects in 4.x due to its underlying structure.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to get in touch with me (emoffatt@xxxxxxxxxx), I'm the development lead for 4.x so your 4.x issues are mine...;-).

Onwards,

The reason is that 4.2 is where all major new feature development is happening in the Platform. The 3.8 version is focused primarily on stability and bug fixes. I believe most projects contribute their latest release to the release train each year.

Please don't hesitate to enter a bug against Eclipse Platform if you are seeing a problem that occurs when running your component on 4.2 that doesn't happen on 3.8. They should be fully compatible, and unless you are using Platform internal code that has changed between those releases, you should be able to run on either one.
