[cross-project-issues-dev] Runtimes vs. SDK's

To answer the crux of  the attached note (which I've also posted to Eclipse Foundation newsgroup). .

The observed limitation is a "point in time" limitation, since Callisto "releases" are made up (usually) from project's "interim" update sites,
they are not "found" automatically by the implanted update sites, which most projects specify as their permeant (near future) update sites.

So, yes, the workflow is supposed to be
install (potentially many) features from Callisto
in addition to the actual function, this provides the implanted Update URL's for the features installed
go back to specific project sites to get "extras" such as SDK/Source for desired projects
(its assumed the desired "sdk" features would be some subset of total installed features, so, this hopefully
would reduce both foot print and band width).

But I agree, at this point in time, it makes it hard to test to be sure the designed workflow works correctly.
To "test" the workflow, after installing from Callisto Discovery site, you can "manually" add the interim sites to your update manger, such as
http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/updates/3.2milestones/site.xml

I would be GREAT to have more people testing this workflow, so, I will publish all the "interim" sites in
http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/Callisto_Coordinated_Update_Sites

Thanks,

Sending to the group.  I believe we covered this topic in a previous meeting, but I don’t recall the conclusion.  I’ll add it to the agenda for today.

Doug,

I would hope the Callisto Project might discuss this issue which was posted on Eclipse.Foundation and form a response. I’m copying that posting here with my response that touches on a related more minor issue. I think it essential Callisto deal with this issue if it hadn’t already planned to. And, if the plan does deal with the issue… my apologies for wasting your time.

Let me offer a hearty "hear hear" to your concern. I think that for Callisto to be successful the complaint expressed here will have to be addressed.

Erkki, you might want to add your name to the cc list for bugzilla #138244 < https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=138244 >. There I expressed concern about how a platform download results in a Help=>Contents that gives the Workbench User Guide whose first page says  "(You can get the Welcome view back at any time by selecting <Help =>
Welcome>.)" This despite the fact that Help=>Welcome does not exist on the platform download, or that download with all of Callisto installed. So, in essence, my bugzilla is the tip of the iceberg you've identified above.

On #1:  ignore my date for RC2.  I pulled it off of the wrong schedule.  According to the Callisto page, it’s on May 5.
