Because there are many specific gdb modifications/patches which were made for 
the old versions. Their upgrade is sometimes not a trivial task which 
somebody must do and this "somebody" is still looked for...:-))
For example, I use gdb with BDM interface to the MPC860 CPU, it exist for 5.3 
but not higher. And it works fine! :-)
