[birt-pmc] Need to restore preview capability in Ganymede plans

Hi,

Can we talk about this at Monday's meeting.   Obviously the earlier in the work plan we can get this work done, the better.

thanks

Subject
Preview of BIRT with Eclipse 3.4

Mike,

In the Europa and the prior releases, BIRT has been relying on the embedded Tomcat server, included by the Eclipse platform, for its preview capabilities.  The platform had been using Tomcat (in the org.eclipse.tomcat plugin) for its on-line help utility previously, and, at Europa, switched to use JeTTy instead.  Because of the switch, the platform almost removed Tomcat during Europa, but decided to keep it in Europa since several Eclipse projects depended on it.

As we moved into the Ganymede release, the platform had the Tomcat plugin removed as its first order of business.  See the following bug for more details:

        https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/show_bug.cgi?id=173692

This would force all the Tomcat-dependent projects (including BIRT) to either switch to JeTTY or look for an alternative strategy.  Would you be able to check with the BIRT PMC on the target milestone to have BIRT's preview capability restored?  Obviously, the earlier this can be done, the sooner we can start porting our current code to the Ganymede-based IES builds.

Note:  I had just done some experiment -- I put together an installation with an Eclipse 3.4 nightly build and all the other 3.3.x-based pieces for EMF/GEF/BIRT.  The Preview tab of the BIRT report design editor disappeared, so did the Preview/View As toolbar icon.  So, there is no way to do a preview.  (It is good in the sense that everything is hidden, so the user would not be clicking on some button to cause crashes.)  When I pulled the org.eclipse.tomcat plugin from Eclipse 3.3 and plugged it into the 3.4 installation, those tab and toolbar icon would show up, and they seem to be working OK so far.  (Of course, this is not a long-term solution, but we may be able to get by for a short period of time.)

Thanks,
