RE: [birt-pmc] Eclipse Downloads

Hi Mike,

Back in February of this year, as strawman packages were being defined by the packaging project, I attempted to get BIRT included in some of the Java profiles that were being defined via the newsgroup as well as in a project review conference call (please see http://www.eclipse.org/newsportal/article.php?id=70&group=eclipse.technology.packaging#70 for one of the newsgroup posts). It appears that at the time, the idea of including BIRT did not seem to gain any traction. Given the maturity and adoption that BIRT has achieved, what would you suggest as the best method of communicating the need to include BIRT in some of the top level packages?

Thanks!

I think having more than 5 packages in the main download pages will make the list too long to be user friendly (Ideally, 3 would have been better). But not having BIRT in any of the packages does left out an important component on the Eclipse platform, given that almost all Java or JEE applications have a reporting need.

I wonder if we shall petition to include BIRT in the JEE and/or Java package.

	Mike,

Did I say nightmare? Okay, maybe that is a bit of an exaggeration. >From the new top level, I actually see ways to get to BIRT (By Project, By Topic, and Popular Projects) so that is good. I just wonder if some users may find the navigation tricky (we're report developers, we need all the help we can get).

I will take a look at the Packaging Project.

	Hey Scott,

Is this really that bad? We certainly didn't intend to cause anyone a "navigation nightmare". The goal was to provide every user a role-based mechanism to getting their Eclipse package. (You can find the contents of each package here <http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/moreinfo/compare.php> .)

The top right nav is shown below, and gets you to the BIRT download in two clicks ("By Project" -> BIRT)

If this isn't good enough, the place to start is the Eclipse Packaging Project <http://www.eclipse.org/epp/> . They're the ones currently defining the packages.

I finally started working on getting BIRT running on my Ubuntu machine as part of the community certified tagging. While downloading, I went to the main Eclipse download page.

	http://www.eclipse.org/downloads

It looks like things have changed. They now have five featured Europa packages.

While handy for people wanting one of those packages, it has moved the BIRT download to a bit of a navigation nightmare. Do we want to petition the foundation to get the BIRT All-In-One listed as one of the featured Europa Packages? If yes, who should take this up? I am happy to talk to the webmasters if no one else wants to do it.

	Scott
