I happen to agree they cannot be removed. But I'll point to a broader reason. Changing the language* in a way that's incompatible with existing content is outside the stated goal of the project, at least until we finalize 1.0 (so we have something concrete from which to deviate). We are specifying AsciiDoc, not starting over or defining a different language. We can talk about how we want to evolve the language *after* we finalize 1.0.

What is in scope are clarifications. These are areas of the language where there isn't a clear or consistent rule about which characters are allowed here or what happens when you escape a character there. As we see in some other threads, there are definitely some unwritten rules that need to be recorded.

Best Regards,

-Dan

p.s. Additions, such as the nestable open block, aren't bound to this rule since they don't impact existing content. But that's a conversation for a separate thread.
