Re: [volttron-dev] FW: [eclipse.org-committers] Chat service announcement!

Hey Jak, Im not that familiar with Slack, I do not think the messages there are crawled by search engines, correct? In my opinion, for your average user, or those who are not at the developer level of participation, having a highly accessible forum is a plus. And having easily accessed archives of previously answered questions (through a google search) would be awesome. I guess you get this with StackOverflow, but having a dedicated forum may be an even more inclusive option that I believe would boost public participation.

The way I see it, if you want to maximize the number of people who use Volttron then a forum like that is critical, but these people will likely not contribute much to development. But this interaction and lowered barrier to entry is still very valuable IMO.

Hi.

The Eclipse IoT working group owns a Slack workspace. You can join and create a VOLTTRON channel over there. However, please be aware this is the free plan, and any messages older than 90 days will vanish (not deleted, but not visible again until you get a paid plan).

Does Volttron have a Slack channel? I think Slack would be better, as it is the default way developers in open source communities communicate.

Hi Craig,

Thanks for sharing. I'm interested to see what Eclipse "Chat Service" looks like. I do feel like the Volttron community could benefit from a dedicated forum where the community could post questions and easily find answers to past questions outside of the existing StackOverflow and mailing list channels. Many open source tools have these forums which become the go-to place for novices like myself and keep a nice record of previous conversations for posterity:
Would Eclipse "Chat Service" provide functionality like this? In my opinion a forum like this might help increase Volttron's visibility and empower the community to take Volttron to the next level. But i know nothing about what it takes to set up or maintain a forum like that, these may just be comments from the peanut gallery :)

Thought this might be interesting to test out with the community.  I am unsure as to whether it would be of interest or not.  Please let the group know if this is something we should pursue looking into?

Subject: [eclipse.org-committers] Chat service announcement!

Check twice before you click! This email originated from outside PNNL.

Hello everyone,

We're excited to announce that the Eclipse Foundation will soon be rolling out a new communication service called "Chat Service" based on the Matrix protocol. This will allow the community to test out a new way of communicating within the project, with external communities or with the foundation team.

We invite you to connect to the preview platform starting from March 15th for a one-month trial period. Our goal is to collect feedback on the original needs of chat communication, but also on the Matrix choice, federated communication, community openness, features, platform stability, and more.

Please note that this is the first iteration, so there is an organization and behavior already set.

We welcome any proposals or suggestions that can be discussed later.

For more details, please join us on March 15th, the day the preview launches.

Stay tuned!
