I have added the following comment from pramsey:

There is also a second wizard you could try that may be easier?
1. Add Layer
2. Select DataStore wizard
3. Choose PostGIS from the list
4. Fill in the connection details
While this one does not list the tables or anything it does allow you to see exactly what the connection parameters are.
