Jody,
Yep, the ArcSDE JAR file request in 1.8.M8 now asks for the SDK, JPE and
ICU.
Performance is actually pretty good (compares well to ArcMap).I can
understand why it takes so long with so many layers.
No probs on rasters for the mean time. We only have a few Rasters in our
Corporate Db and get good performance from GeoServer on these anyway.

It is pulling down the titles and bounds for each layer; I wonder if
there is a faster way (it should be doing that in a background thread
...).

Gabriel has added raster support int he last 6 months and we have not
added it into uDig yet (ie support is there at the programming level
we just have not made the user interface for it yet in uDig).
