That said you do not need to build udig to start creating your own
application on top of it; go through the tutorials here and they will
take you from setting up a development environment on top of the uDig
SDK right through to creating a custom app.

(Not that I want to discourage you from building uDig from source -
usually that is only needed if you want to work on uDig itself; not if
you just want to build your own thing using some uDig components).
