What platform are you using? If you check the release notes you can see I need a windows user to construct a JRE with ecw support (right now it only has bundled support for mrsid etc...).
The linux paltform has seen a volunteer construct a JRE that includes ecw support.

The link referred to by these instructions is broken (http://www.geo-solutions.it/libraries/) so we will need to ask for clarification from the imageio-ext project.
