As alternative you could use "Spatial Operations" (deployed
es.axios.udig.extensions plugins).
Thinking in your specific problem you could use the "Join" spatial operation
described in the next link.

By example
1 - use the buffer operation to make a new layer with a buffer of the desired
distance.
2 - using that buffer result layer and you layer, make a join using the WITHIN
relation (check "show the result feature selected").
3- you will get a set of features selected in your map
4 - if you need take a look at your alfanumeric data, you could select the
Table View that now shows the selection produced by the Join spatial
operation.
