Re: [udig-users] Difference between Udig CQL & PostGIS SFSQL

Jody,
Thanks and indeed I meant CQL of course :-). So the CQL-language is
there to "feed" the visualisation of PostGIS (or any other spatial
database) in Udig, if I understand you correctly ?
Nope; it is just there for one data entry dialog; allowing advanced
users to specify something like "the sql where clause". It has no
meaning beyond this one screen.
I'm not sure if I understand the following sentence: "As for
interaction with PostGIS we generate SFSQL requests as needed."
Does this mean it is possible to run these queries and Udig (again)
serves as a front-end (visualizing the query) ?
Jesse is working on that as a community plug-in; if you are a developer
with spare cycles offer to help out; or if you are a user that can help
test etc...
For the visualization side of things it is based on the "Style Layer
Descriptor" specification; which makes use of something called the
"Filter specification" to select content for display.
As an example try walkthrough 1 and look at the Theme page of the style
editor vs the XML page of the style editor.
Indeed, it would be interesting to extend the query-capabilities of
Udig (or within a GUI).
Yes; now all we need is money or time :-)
For now my use of Udig has been limited to visualizing the PostGIS
database and as a GUI to visualize WMS/WFS-requests.
Should I conclude from this that Udig's main goal is to serve as a GUI
to visualize/update the PostGIS database?
The example application we make available for people to look up
functions as you describe.
The main goal of uDig is as base for custom applications (look over the
uDig gallary for examples).
Thanks for your help !
Steven
