Re: [udig-devel] Gsoc 2013

That sounds great! A project on the GIS side of the street :)

I help again this year with respect to training, we just need to sort out if we are taking part.

Hi Jody, Hi Andrea, Hi all!

As I briefly stated in another mail, I am interested in joining GSoC 2013.

Still I am not sure if the uDig community has a major interest in supporting me since the idea I have for this is quite a niche one. It is developing a landslide forecasting algorithm for running in the Spatial Toolbox.
So: no work on uDig core functions or known issue debugging.
The cause is that the development will be part of my MSc Thesis and such has to follow some tight guidelines. Mainly it has to be one piece of original work and must constitute some kind of progress in the domain of Computer Science.

Despite this I feel it would be a good opportunity for the uDig framework as a whole to benefit from my commitment, although current urgencies might be others.

What do you think?

Morning Vishal:

I have not heard back from the developer list on taking part in GSoC this year, we had a meeting last week but the topic was not raised. We have traditionally joined the OSGeo mob with respect to involvement in GSoC, but with our recent involvement in LocationTech I am actually not sure what we need to do.

The proposals for GSoC actually come from students such as yourself, a large part of our selection criteria is actually based on communication (which you are acing by contacting us on the email list).

We have had mixed success in pervious years, often due to lack of communication, but also due to students treating this as an assignment and trying to do things at the last moment. Based on this we suggest students finish functionality early and take the last three weeks to work on the other parts of open source (documentation, ensuring your code shows up in a release … and communication).

All the best,
