Re: [udig-devel] Problem Launching UDig on Windows XP

Good to know... I've never had any problems with it but I've always ran the application from the same user that installed it.

The problem that I have with the installer is that it puts all of the
shortcuts and program group into the profile for the user who installed
uDig and not into the "All Users" profile. Our environment prevents
individual users installing programs and updating the All Users profile so I have to change this myself and fix up permissions in order for all
users who log into a workstation to be able to use uDig.

Subject: Re: [udig-devel] Problem Launching UDig on Windows XP

Not to be a pain on this topic, but it must be time for me to rant about
it yet again. 8D

...the problem of launching Udig in Windows XP from the shortcut
installed by Udig's very own installer is an old familiar problem that
goes back a couple years and many versions, that has been posted to the
list many times.

Perhaps it doesn't affect everyone, but for those like myself who are
affected it definately gives this wonderful product a distinct
'unpolished' feel you might say ... as does the refractions.net homepage
that has been broken for years for the great horde of IE users out
there. But the arguement over making a 'standard' website versus a
website that people can actually view can be left for another time.

Back on topic, Long time users of Udig know to delete the shortcut that Udig's very own installer created and manually make a new shortcut that
points to the Udig executable, or to just start the program directly
from the executable.

I'm sure some first time Udig users figure it out, but no doubt many
just assume that Udig is stillborn and move on, never to know how useful
the product is, and never to discover and join the community that
supports the product.

Thank you for reading my rant, it was written not with any offense
intended, but with a little shock and surprise that this problem still
has not been fixed after all this time, or at least displayed as a
warning message during installation.

Cheers,
