Thanks for your help guys. I have only just come up for air, but I did 
manage to set up a render listener at the 12th hour by casting the IMap 
object to a Map object. Then I was able to access the RenderExecutor and 
add a listener in there. I think I will use Jesse's new listeners 
though, as I would prefer to stick to an interface.

Jody, I will also go through the documentation you pointed me at. I was 
in the process of implementing the render listener by the time you were 
able to respond. I guess that's the problem with working in the weekend.
