Looks like ECW may easily be taken care of, as ERMapper has a free Java  
library  
(http://www.ermapper.com/downloads/download_view.aspx? 
PRODUCT_VERSION_ID=114)  available that uses JNI to access their C/C++  
ECW library.  Don't know if there any licensing issues or if there's a  
need for a uDig wrapper so all raster formats share an I/O API.  Will  
look into assisting GeoTools with GeoTIFF support as well as  
investigating LAN and raster-in-SDE.

I don't have immense GIS experience, but from my use of ESRI's ArcGIS  
software I'd say proper buffering of raster data is important.  Loading  
up a handful of ONCs and a couple NITF images practically kills ArcMap.  
 I know this is a GIS product, but it's still nice to be able to plot  
imagery.
