Adding on to Jakob's suggestions: if you are looking to model *cooperative* autonomous vehicles (such as for platooning), the Plexe project <http://plexe.car2x.org/> has extended SUMO to use a computer system for controlling vehicle behavior (speed, distance to leader, join maneuver, etc).
