Re: [soa-pmc] [CQ 7429] jython Version: 2.7beta1 *Subset*

+1
optional scripting engine is definitely workswith

Knowing the usage scenario: It is definitely a “works with” and the fallback is easy (disable the corresponding option in the select box for available scripting formats).

Hence, +1

Hi Wayne,

Thanks a lot for the explanations!

After reading through the relevant threads, I think this makes perfect sense as a workswith. If Jython is not available, I the system should offer only _javascript_ as a possibility for scripting.

So +1 from me.

Adrian.

SOA PMC,

I assume that this request is something that the SOA PMC has not had to deal with (they don't come up all that often).

The requirement to discuss the request comes from the Guidelines for the Review of Third-Party Dependencies [1], which states in part:

It will be the responsibility of each PMC to document all "works with" and "prerequisite"
dependencies between Eclipse Foundation code and non-Eclipse Foundation code. As part of
this process, the PMCs will be expected to make a determination whether a dependency is a
“works with” or a “prerequisite”.

a. These discussions and decisions must occur transparently either via email on the public
PMC mailing list, or in the minutes of meetings distributed to the public PMC mailing list.

Essentially, the PMC needs to make the case that this request is indeed a reasonable "works with".

You might, for example, assert that this is a type (i) "works with" dependency, per the definition:

The Eclipse software does not require the third party software to be present. If the third
party software happens to be present, the Eclipse software may call or invoke it.
Example: If a web browser is present, clicking on URL's in Eclipse will cause the user's
configured web browser to open the URL.

based on comment #16 from CQ 7429 [2],

We would modify our code to offer the corresponding functionality only if the
required library (jython) happens to be available, but not add jython to our
download.

The outstanding question in my mind is whether or not this makes technical sense. If this does make sense, please just vote +1 on this thread and we can make this happen.

Thanks,

Wayne

SOA PMC, this CQ requires your input.

Per the IP Policy for third-party dependencies [1], you need to have a public discussion regarding whether or not this dependency can be declared a "workswith".

Thanks,

Wayne
