Re: [sdv-wg] Invitation: Research Study on Rust Adoption in Automotive Software Development

Hi Ingo 👋

Wanted to share some information from inside of the Rust Project in case you were not aware:
- The Rust Vision doc team conducted a survey last year and received approximately 4,000 responses
- I joined the Rust Vision doc team around May/June of last year and then conducted about 25 interviews with people who use Rust in safety-critical areas, want to use Rust, or don't want to use Rust
  - There was a heavy slant towards Automotive, since that's mostly folks I know :)
- That resulted in this Rust Blog post: What does it take to ship Rust in safety-critical?
- And some insights shared on the slides here from the talk Niko and Jack did at RustConf 2025
  - (I suggest downloading them,  then searching for "safety-critical"; unfortunately GitHub's UI for PDFs is not great)

(Due to how we collected survey data and interview data, this was done confidentially. Therefore, we must anonymize data / insights and cannot share them directly with you, see below.)

Movement is forming around establishing a Rust Project User Research Team to gather this type of data more effectively. This is key: the User Research Team must be able to share this data within the Rust Project and with research institutions in a controlled way while still respecting confidentiality as needed.

If any part of this sounds interesting, feel free to reach out directly to me via email. Maybe we can find a way to collaborate. ☺️

Cheers,
Pete

Dear Eclipse SDV partners,

Fraunhofer IEM is conducting a research study on the commercial use of the Rust programming language for the software-defined vehicle, automotive software and related industries. We're interested in current usage, future plans, and the main drivers and barriers for adoption in the industry.

If you have professional experience with Rust (or have considered adopting it), we'd appreciate your input:

Additionally, we are planning ~30-minute expert interviews with practitioners and deciders in automotive software development to find out if Rust is being used or not and understand the reasons. If you are interested or can recommend participants, please contact us: rust-survey@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.

Thank you very much for supporting our research!
