Hi Ingo 👋
Wanted to share some information from inside of the Rust Project in case you were not aware:
- I joined the Rust Vision doc team around May/June of last year and then conducted about 25 interviews with people who use Rust in safety-critical areas, want to use Rust, or don't want to use Rust
- There was a heavy slant towards Automotive, since that's mostly folks I know :)
- And some insights shared on the slides
here from the talk Niko and Jack did at RustConf 2025
- (I suggest downloading them, then searching for "safety-critical"; unfortunately GitHub's UI for PDFs is not great)
(Due to how we collected survey data and interview data, this was done confidentially. Therefore, we must anonymize data / insights and cannot share them directly with you, see below.)
Movement is forming around establishing a Rust Project User Research Team to gather this type of data more effectively. This is key: the User Research Team must be able to share this data within the Rust Project and with research institutions in a controlled way while still respecting confidentiality as needed.
If any part of this sounds interesting, feel free to reach out directly to me via email. Maybe we can find a way to collaborate. ☺️
Cheers,
Pete
