Thats right for quite some time you needed one of these to get access to the ApplicationModel. Quite recently the ApplicationModelManager was added which has some static methods to give you access to the ApplicationModel instance. 

I guess that helps for your example......

In the existing code all classes that modify the navigation are either
subclasses of NavigationNodeController or have a reference to a
controller, which doesn't work in my case.
