Interesting - there are two paints points caused by Christmas. My perception is that the release is too close to Christmas and that we can't support users well (in a timely manner) after the 2020-12 release because of it.
But from the dev perspective, the -03 M1 date is too soon after Christmas. For the platform there were essentially no days to do anything in M1 for devs who didn't start work until 4 Jan again.
The interesting thing is that the proposal to bring the 2020-12 release 1 week earlier does lead to a longer M1 period. From early Dec until mid Jan.

Assuming everyone starts again Jan 2, there are about 10 workdays for March M1. I prefer combining March M1 and M2 over shortening December.
How would that help the goal to have some time for reaction between December release and Christmas?
Planning council discusses moving one week earlier the 2021-12 release so there is time for reaction (if there is need for it) before Christmas.
Personally I think the proposal makes sense and the best way is by shortening the December cycle, that way it will be more like the March one (which loses M1 time due to Christmas vacations).
Let me know if there are objections/proposals/opinions with reasons behind them so I can present the Eclipse TLP opinion on the next meeting.

For the 2021-12, if we follow the classical pattern we will have mostly
the same release date as the one this year.
If we would like to have one week between the GA and the holidays, we
can reduce M1 dev period for this release by one week and then release
on December 8th.
