Re: [paho-dev] Welcome Roger Light as a new technology.paho Committer

Just to reiterate what Roger and I spoke about on twitter; I would like us to put some collective thought into what features we'd want in the tool and sketch out some wireframes so that we have some consistency before anyone starts implementing.

As we're talking about this in the context of replacing the IA92 gui, lets use that as the starting straw-man for discussion. What do we like/don't like about that ui.

I've created a page on the wiki to host the discussion - I'll add some screen shots of IA92 later on and we can go from there. http://wiki.eclipse.org/Paho/GUI_Utility

I was thinking of doing the same thing for the C client - that is, creating a Python GUI for it, preferably using wxPython.  We might be able to share some of the GUI code.

One screen/panel I want to see is for incoming messages, which has a separate element/line for each topic, the latest message on that topic, and the timestamp, with possibly the ability to zoom into more detail for each message.  Then it can be used to monitor the latest updates for a set of topics.  Optionally it could allow filtering by topic or other fields.

Also I want it to be able to handle multiple connections simultaneously, and have a packet tracing screen.

Thanks Andy.

I'll get the python module committed asap, but first I need to get all
of this marking done... Bad time of year for me!

I'm planning on starting work on a Python gui akin to the old IBM one.
Basic, but enough to get going with and very easy to install and run.
Nick and I had a brief exchange about this sort of thing on twitter
and we agreed that it would be best to try and make sure there was a
consistent interface if we were going to build guis in different
languages. A bit of thought into the interface wouldn't hurt. Nice,
usable guis aren't really my area of expertise. Would anybody like to
step forward to help out?

Cheers,

Roger
