As for "cannot complete the install", this is really a p2 user question.
Something in your installation prevents m2e upgrade, so you need to find
what that is and uninstall it. Or start with a fresh eclipse install.
You may also want to wait until m2e 1.1 M3 becomes available as
development/snapshot builds are really targeted at m2e developers and
advanced users interested in helping with m2e development.

A P2 user question?  What's P2, actually?  I'm not aware I'm a P2 user 
but I suppose I must be.

Yes, thanks, I will wait.  It's not that I wouldn't on some level like 
to be involved in m2e development or in helping with it, it's that I 
don't have the time.  I hope that you will understand where I am coming 
from.  Input from users like me should be of use to you in assessing 
your product's progress.
So the answer to my original question is, yes, m2e project configuration 
updating does remove .classpath entries, it's a known issue, and will be 
fixed in the 1.1 release.
Which I eagerly await.
