Re: [jakarta.ee-spec.committee] A/I from Steering Committee - updating Platform Project page with release dates

Since this topic was discussed extensively on the Spec Committee call today, I wanted to ensure that everybody on the Committee sees this exchange with Will and others.  This note references the PR that I was mentioning on the call.  I also put this PR into our minutes for today so that we can all comment on it.  This can't wait until our next Spec Committee call, so if you have comments or suggestions, let's discuss via this email thread or, preferably, put comments in to the PR.  Thanks!

Might be easier to discuss via a PR:  https://github.com/eclipse-ee4j/jakartaee-platform/pull/208

This PR would update this page with a TOC and a newly inserted Schedule section:  https://eclipse-ee4j.github.io/jakartaee-platform/jakartaee9/JakartaEE9
We could then update the Platform Specifications Page (https://jakarta.ee/specifications/platform/9/) with a link to this page.

Note that I didn't break it down into the specifics that your suggested list did since the requirements for the PRs would indicate that the TCKs have successfully been executed and using Java 11.  But, to help show that we want the PRs to be staggered, I did outline the multiple waves of ballots, each separated by one week.

Due to this tight schedule, I see no way to do another Milestone release prior to the final.  And, even if we had the time, I would question whether this is worthwhile since the teams are currently working on getting Java 11 working, so they know it's a priority once this Milestone is complete.

Is this aggressive?  Certainly, but I don't think we have a choice.  We *have* to push hard to get Jakarta EE 9 done and out the door by CodeOne.  If we don't complete Jakarta EE 9 within one year of Jakarta EE 8, then we might as well hang up the cleats (imho).

Will,
Since just about everybody you sent this note to is on the Platform team, I think you have that action covered...  :-)

Your listed schedule items aren't too bad.  A few tweaks in my mind, but you're close.  Providing reasonable, achievable dates is going to be the tough ask.  As you said, it's over the peak of summer vacations, both for US and Europe.  Getting something ready for the Fall is definitely going to be aggressive.

I can put something in place, but it will be subject to change.  That is, all dates are tentative.

Arjan/Kevin/David -
You were the most vocal in discussing this today.   Ccing others as well.
We agreed to update this page:
https://eclipse-ee4j.github.io/jakartaee-platform/jakartaee9/JakartaEE9
...with high-level milestone dates leading up to the Jakarta EE 9 Platform release in September.
I assume the Platform team owns this page.  Is that correct?
If so, rather than me requesting an update to this page, would you be able to work with the Platform team to update this?
Simple is fine from my POV, for example:
  • Milestone 1 release - June 23
  • All components and component TCKs, GlassFish and Platform TCKs executing on JDK 11 - date
  • Milestone 2 release?  - date
  • All components passing TCKs and dev complete on JDK 11  - date
  • All component specs submitted for ballot - date
  • All component specs approved - date
  • GlassFish passing TCKs and dev complete on JDK 11 - date
  • Platform specs submitted for ballot - Sept 16?   Sept 2?
  • Platform specs approved - Sept 30?   Sept 16 (target Livestream date)?
The Platform team can own the right milestones and dates, but I think it would be helpful to be realistic, now, about achievable dates, including factoring in summer vacations, review periods for ballots, potential requirements for multiple reviews, etc.  High level, if M1 is end of June, and we stick to a Livestream event on Sept 16, that leaves about two months during peak summer months to go from M1 on JDK 8 end of June, to all TCKs passing on JDK 11 and all specs submitted for ballot on Sept 2.   That seems aggressive.
Please confirm you will take this up with the Platform team (or not).
Thanks
Will
