Edge Computing World and EclipseCon post mortem
Edge Computing World, a conference organized by Edge Native member Topio Networks, was running from October 12 to October 15 2020. Our working group had two sessions during the event. Angelo Corsaro (ADLINK) and Kilton Hopkins (Edgeworx) presented together on October 12; their session was focused on Eclipse zenoh and Eclipse ioFog demos respectively. On the 13, Angelo and Kilton were joined by Frédéric Desbiens (Eclipse Foundation) for a session dedicated to our Edge Native vision and project roadmaps for ioFog, fog05 and zenoh. Both sessions were well attended.
EclipseCon had a dedicated IoT and Edge track again this year. Dejan Bosanac, who had an Edge session, mentioned that the fact he had pre-recorded his talk enabled him to answer questions in real time, which made the whole thing more interactive. IoT and Edge was also given a 90 minute session during Community Day (October 19). Projects that wished so were given a 5 minute time slot to give a status update. Overall, call participants who were at Community Day found the status updates useful. However, time was very tight and there was little to no time for questions and conversations, which is a problem. Also, since the session was conducted using Zoom’s webinar feature, only speakers could be seen and heard, which limited interactions. If EclipseCon is virtual in 2021, call participants asked for a longer session conducted in a regular Zoom meeting. Also, the time slot of the Community Day session made it difficult for people living on the West Coast of North America to attend. Call participants recommended to move the session to a later time slot to make it accessible to a broader audience.
Frédéric Desbiens delivered a short keynote during Community Day to review the growth and accomplishments of the Eclipse IoT, Eclipse Edge Native and Eclipse Sparkplug working groups.
