=====
  1. Deploy and control AI apps on the Edge — Harald Mueller, Siemens

    • “Seamless computing”: Components of the application can run in the cloud, at the edge or on a device. Each app component is deployed separately.

    • Components

      • Application model: Apps are modular

      • Infrastructure model: nodes, links and network nodes

      • Scheduler Maps a set of apps to a given infrastructure

    • Kubernetes, partly defines app model, infra model. Is also a scheduler

    • K8s has limitations: no network awareness, etc.

    • How to overcome limitations?

      • App model describes characteristics, requirements and constraints of modular applications

      • Apps are modular, with workloads that exchange data via interfaces

      • Infrastructure model describes capabilities of a given infrastructure.

      • Given the app and infra models, you can mathematically describe the problem to optimize the scheduling

  2. Relative positioning with LF Edge - especially Horizon & Eve

    • LF Edge Akraino ELIOT (slides)

      • ELIOT: Edge Lightweight and IoT

      • Akraino Blueprint to provide Industrial IoT solutions

      • 2 demos already: video surveillance and smart data center ambient control

      • System has a manager (controller) and nodes

      • Software stack

        • Supports x86, ARM

        • Ubuntu, centOS, Tailored OS

        • Lightweight container orchestration: KubeEdge, k3s (next release)

        • Monitoring: cAdvisor, Prometheus, Grafanna

        • Web UI and CLI

    • Open Horizon (Slides)

      • Eurotech working on projects involving “Edge supercomputers” with IBM

      • IBM Edge Application Manager / Open Horizon → Eclipse Kura / Eurotech ESF

      • Need a scaling mechanism to deploy apps at the Edge.

      • Open Horizon: manage and deploys workloads

      • Can deploy Kura / ESF on edge nodes in parallel with other workloads on Edge nodes
