Hi everyone.

Thank you very much for attending the initial meeting of the working group. You will find the meeting minutes below.

One of our first tasks will be to formalize our scope and goals and to ensure our charter[1] reflects them. Please take the time to familiarize yourselves with it.

For everyone's convenience, I also included a link to the working group's participation agreement[2]. Joining the working group is free for existing members of the Eclipse Foundation.

=== Minutes ===
Angelo Corsaro (by phone), Gabriele Baldoni - ADLINK (Strategic Member)
Todd Papaioannou, Kilton Hopkins - Edgeworx (Strategic Member)
Tony Homer - Intel (Silver/Participant Member)
Nicola La Gloria - Kynetics (Silver/Participant Member)
Dejan Bossac - Red Hat *
Jello Millenaar - IOTA *
Kai Hudella - Bosch *

Eclipse Foundation: Frederic Desbiens, Paul Buck

* - Participant agreements to be sent to Red Hat, IOTA and Bosch

General takeaways...

For consideration for charter scope:
  • Establish a clear definition for Edge
  • How do our existing customers provide focus to what we do? Telecomm, robotics, ...? Industrial IoT. Autonomous vehicles. Other verticals?
  • Leverage the technologies we have in Eclipse IoT to gain advantage on the Edge
  • As we look at these 3 dimensions: Define the architecture and identify the gaps
  • Market early and often. Need the success stories. Start with content that draws attention to Eclipse Edge
Regular meeting cadence agreed: Initially a bi-weekly call to build momentum, over time shift to once a month.
Eclipse Foundation to set up basic infrastructure for the working group (mailing list, Slack, etc.)
Formal public launch at Edge Computing World conference in San Jose in December 9th to 12th. 75 minutes slot held for Eclipse with potentially a booth.

Kilton: We have ioFog, Fog05 + IoT assets. Stay close to working code and reference. Community values working production grade code over anything else. Lots of good projects that exist under the Eclipse IoT projects. Consume easily, get it to work together. Build a brand. Define the gaps .Explain our PoV on edge and IoT. Edge computing is an enabler for IoT. Opportunity to get AI down to the edge. It is not just labels, we need to lead with the technologies that are defining what edge is.

Angelo:
1. Positioning with respect other edge initiatives, how we are different. Bringing value, focus on the problems we are providing solutions to.
2. Working software, identify the edge gaps that we need to focus.
3. Agree on them. Which ones do we need to address first?
4. We need to create massive visibility. Use the Eclipse marketing machine.
5. The border is subjective. Where the partition is drawn depends on many factors including compute power, bandwidth, connectivity. The edge is up for you to decide.

Tony: Read white papers from the Fog Consortium. Need to understand the problems that the solutions will be addressing. What about new use cases? Those that are not possible with cloud today.

Nicola: How do we drive business out of this? Great marketing from Eclipse + need projects between members. Difference between IoT and edge? Need to get a deployment and distribution model to companies of all sizes. Give small companies the technologies they need, and not have them figure it out.

Jelle: Cubic project to outsource compute to edge devices. Query multiple devices. Bring trust to these systems. Discovering IoT more, solving the integration challenges is of value.

Todd: Smart contracts at edge, Tangle has a role to play. Be clear about what we do. Edge is a horizontal of where things run, IoT is vertical: smart city, vision. Anything outside the cloud is the edge.

Dejan: Edge is an extension to the cloud, using the IoT technologies in that apply. Most Edge initiatives are focused on infrastructure and how do you get your software there, we need to think about the application on the edge.

Kai: Struggling with the diversity within Eclipse IoT, hard to make a cohesive picture. Another chance to take what we have been working on in the cloud with the edge, and bringing together in a consistent archietecutre. Message becomes easier to convey. For us the edge is at the roadside. Put compute capacity at the tower.
=============

Please let me know if there are any inaccuracies or omissions in the minutes.
