2. Product pitches. 

I often just call a spade a spade. Maybe this isn't the best approach, what do others think?

A product pitch in itself doesn't seem to be problematic, but it could be a symptom of a larger problem. A product pitch that addresses a problem of general interest in a way that is widely applicable to the community would theoretically be fine.  However, typically product pitches would be talks specific to the product being sold.  In my opinion, these kinds of talks should be rejected based on their lack of general applicability rather than on their productness.
