I am afraid that the amount of coordination for the dinner BOFs will be to high of a barrier and my guess is that they will not happen.
Trying to coordinate the reservation with a restaurant is a challenge as is, and with 8 – 10 people (maybe), it will be a pain for the organizer and the restaurant.
I am not sure the benefits, if any, will outweigh the distractions and effort.
My 2 cents..

Subject: Re: [eclipsecon-na-program-committee] better BoFs at ECon
How about the following:Leave lunch alone. I agree with everyone that it is working well and attendees need the downtime.
-
Monday BOFs - 5:30-6:30pm
-
NOTE we will have a happpy hour from 4:30-5:30 in the exhibit hall. We usually have the awards ceremony but we are not going to do that this year.]
-
Monday Dinner BOFs - 7-10
-
As described but I would suggest we need a better name.
-
If we do these dinners I suggest we do them early in the week so gives people an opportunity to network.
-
Tuesday
-
No BOFs. We will have an exhibitor reception from 6-7 or 7:30
-
Eclipse Late Night 9-1pm we invite people to come back to the hotel bar.
-
-Wednesday BOFs 6-7pm
Overall we have only 1 time slot for BOFs on Monday and Tuesday. It would mean fewer slots but hopefully better quality.
Thoughts?

I agree with everyone on the lunch situation.
I also don't like the idea of BoFs during lunch or too late in the evening (i.e. after having dinner somewhere else).
The dinner BoF is interesting. However, if we do this then we must ensure that these events feel inclusive. Even after attending 7 EclipseCons, I still find 'tagging along for dinner' a little socially awkward. Maybe a dinner BoF will help
with this? Anne, while obviously the attendees are expected to self-organize the BoFs, would it be possible to suggest some reasonably priced restaurants for them to host the BoF at? Another consideration is the size. 30 people showing up at a restaurant is
probably not ideal.
I do like the idea of "organizing" the outside dinner with some topics to talk about. That might even make it easier to have a nice dinner experience for those that come alone (not sure if that's really a problem).
Pascal's idea of having the hotel restaurant deliver food sounds also nice, but I'm not sure if they can manage for so many people.
Cheers

As for the late night BoFs, I agree with everyone else, once people leave, it's very hard to get them back and a 9:30 BoF is much too late.

+1 for an early BoF before dinner. The Boston EclipseCon BoF schedule
just didn't work, for the reasons already mentioned about folks
leaving for dinner and not coming back.
Also +1 for leaving lunch alone. As John and Gunnar stated, lunch is a
good time to break from the conference and socialize. I would hate
attending a BoF with a boxed lunch.
