[eclipse.org-eclipsecon-program-committee] Some comments on last weeks con-call

[my initial post of this vanished into the ether]

Hi all,
I didn't get to voice any comments on last weeks call because my internet
connection was up and down like the Assyrian empire and I was skyping
to the conference (yes all those beeps was me dropping off and redialing...)

I'm glad to see that we're responding to the big rooms and better AV
feedback we got from this year - there was some serious crowding
in some of the popular talks. The demise of lightning talks is most likely
a good plan at this stage. I don't think that lightning talks lack value,
however we did not do the right thing when we asked people to cut short
their 20 minute talks to a lightning talk - talks of that length need to be
designed for that length ab initio. I'm still thinking that 40 minute talks
are worthy only if the speaker is worthy and that otherwise they are
do-your-email type talks. So I would supply the redundant advice that
the committee be selective in their choices for these slots.

I think that the EclipseCon idol is a nice idea, and I am a fan of the
Ignite style of presentations. Three comments on that, however: (1) I
feel a little discomfort at offering a conference 'slot' to the winner,
but I'm not sure quite why - I guess the slots are in scarce supply
and seem to have too much value to be a prize. Piles of schwag
and phones seems more appropriate; (2) there is no chance of me
wearing Lynn's Simon Cowell wig; (3) is (2) emphasized.

Are we retaining the same proportion of talks for the OSGi DevCon
this year? Will we have the same messages too - the runtime, modeling,
e4 mantra?

I'm sure I missed about 25% or more of the call due to tech issues,
so apologies if there were any questions asked of me when I was
absent!

 cheers
