Re: [ecf-dev] Contributing to Newsreader Salvo as a GSOC project

Hi wim,

I submitted a proposal yesterday. Since I could not contact you before hand I followed [1] when composing the proposal.
I am willing to change it according to your guidance.
I will start off by a background study about NNTP dependency of salvo. I would be very thankful if you can provide more guidelines on what to do.

Regards,
tishan

Harshana, would you be able to mentor this?

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the late reply.

I have not been working on Salvo for a few months. I am okay to pick it up again but I need to see what still needs to be done. One thing that I want is to remove the NNTP protocol as a fixed dependency and make it possible for Salvo to use any comment/reply source (e.g. bugzilla, jira, bulletin boards, etc..).

This would make it possible to use the ECF container architecture below the Salvo UI. We could possibly also re-use some of the Bulletin Board work that was done previously for ECF.

My problem is time.

Regards,

Wim

Hi isuru,
Thanks for your concerns. I already followed the wiki and going through the source code. What I need is a guidance toward a project idea which I can implements as a GSOC project. Since there are not much details I'll use [1] as my reference.
I am very interested in contributing to Eclipse. So I will somehow  submit a proposal. It will not be very specific since I do not know about exact needs of the project. Hoping to change it accordingly if I get selected.

tishan

Hi Tishan,

I am the one who did "Salvo UI Integration in the workbench" gsoc project last year.
Till wim reply to your query, I thought of giving you some information on Salvo project.

As the first step, go though salvo project wiki[1] and try out salvo rcp application[2].
Then you can fork the project source[3] from github and start exploring it.

We did some significant work on Salvo in last summer.
Please find the all documents related to "Salvo UI Integration in the workbench" project from [4]

We have identified a set of tasks that needs to be done and listed them as our milestone 6[5].
Feel free to propose your own ideas to improve salvo.

Thank you for your interest in Salvo project.

Hi Wim,
I am Tishan Pubudu Kanishka Dahanayakage from Department of Computer Science and Engineering in University of Moratuwa. I wanted to contribute to Eclipse for GSOC 2012. So I asked for any ideas from ECF developer mailing list. There Scott gave bunch of ideas and ECF Newsreader project appeared to be interesting to me. Scott pointed myself to you for more details. So I want to know whether there are any ideas which I can contribute as a GSOC project?

Regards.
Tishan
