Re: [ecf-dev] Initial upload of jSLP provider to ecf1.osuosl.org

Moving ECF to SVN may be a problem for p2 and the Eclipse project team.  Currently we do not require Eclipse project community members to have an SVN client.  With the evolution of p2 as the new provisioning base and its use of ECF the move to SVN may have implications for people needing to build all of Eclipse from source (e.g., the linux community).  I've not thought this through but it seems there would be some issues needing consideration.

In the limit we should just be consuming ECF as effectively a third party bundle.  That is, we should get some prebuilt version and not need to check it out at all.  Currently we are not at that point with the build given the circularity involved.  As things settle down we should get there.  Again, I'm not sure about the linux distro guys.

So the summary is that the consequences of moving need to be clearly understood and enumerated.  In the end you have to consider the real and perceived gains in moving and weigh them against the impact (positive and negative) on your current and future community.

Scott, Marcus,
Buckminster is one of the few projects that use SVN at Eclipse. I'm
switching between using the Subclipse and the Subversive clients for SVN
and both of them provide sufficient tools (compare, merge, etc.). For
us, SVN has been a positive experience. The server at Eclipse works very
well. A few quirks got polished off by Denis at the beginning and since
then it's been great.

I can't say how well the releng mapfiles etc. will work since we don't
use that (we use our own product to control the build).

I'd be happy to answer any questions regarding our experience so far
with Eclipse and SVN.

Kind Regards,
Thomas Hallgren
