I've once heard that there could also be a legal problem in some countries, but don't have any details on that.

The hack here is that it's a kind of parallel, non official money that cannot be turned into anything of value out of the Eclipse Foundation rewards. Not sure it makes it better legally speaking, but I've seen system with points and rewards in multiple other organizations.
