Re: [wtp-pmc] Restructure Eclipse Data Tools as a subproject ofEclipse Web Tools

I will still be around to answer questions about Corundum as necessary. Corundum is an ant/pde-build/p2 amalgamation. It shouldn’t be hard for someone familiar with these technologies to figure out. The DTP codebase also has the old build system. Someone with pre-CBI build experience might be able to get it working again.

Of course, by the time you merge the multitudes of DTP repos (highly recommend doing this) and move stuff around, you might as well move to using CBI.

Thanks,

- Konstantin

After doing a really light search out of curiosity, I've found recent emails from Konstantin about how DTP is structured.

https://dev.eclipse.org/mhonarc/lists/dtp-dev/msg02364.html

Specifically, it outlines that the buildsystem for DTP is a system called Corundum (which I of course misread to be Conundrum, and thought it was quite fitting).

With Konstantin leaving, it provides us with, well, a conundrum, as to whether or not once moved, it should be migrated to the Tycho build system like the rest of WTP or not, or whether it's even possible.

@Nick, are you willing to take over releng for something with a build system you're not familiar with?

I'm guessing that we'll do this when you're ready to start :-) I'd like to make this happen in late January, so I think that we're in alignment. Ping me when you're back and ready to start.

Those individuals who step up are the ones who get to make the decisions. The PMCs get a vote of course. I think that Web Tools is more open to the idea. But... your call.

Since the project is basically dysfunctional (effectively zero active committers), the EMO can just add you as a committer.

Wayne,

Not sure if anyone has replied to you off-list, but...

* I've gotten nominal interest / willingness from Rob and Nitin that this isn't a terrible idea.

* I've also gotten interest/willingness from Alex Kurtakov to move DTP into Tools instead of WTP

I'm good with either plan, assuming someone grants me committership on the project, and that I'll be the person taking over the builds. (This should be considered me volunteering to help.)

When would you like to start actually doing work here? I'm on PTO Dec 24-Jan 10, and JBoss Tools has a maintenance release in late January, so my time is constrained that month.

Hope that helps,

Nick

Greetings Web Tools PMC

I understand from a recent Eclipse Planning Council call that you have discussed possibly taking Data Tools as a subproject. This feels like a natural fit, but Eclipse Tools might also provide a good home.

If you feel strongly about this one way or the other, I would appreciate you providing some input on the bug record that I have created to track this effort.

I would like to start this process in early 2018.

Thanks,

Wayne
