Hello,
For those who may not be aware, contributors from SensorUp are interested in expanding the Whiskers library to the Arduino platform. This will give developers of Arduino and Arduino derived microcontroller boards the ability to access the SensorThings
API with an easy to use C/C++ API in the Arduino IDE. It should allow users to avoid having to manually serialize/deserialize JSON in their C/C++ code, as well as make HTTP connections easier.
Before we can have the code released to the public we will need a new repository from Eclipse. I have contacted the Eclipse Management Organization and Wayne Beaton pointed me to the Eclipse Bugzilla for setting up GitHub changes. However we (developers
of Whiskers) need to make sure we are using the Arduino name appropriately, as it is trademarked.
From what I can find, there are many libraries on GitHub that use "Arduino" in their names although they are not owned by Arduino LLC. This isn't a good enough reason for us to do it as we should be diligent and verify usage of trademarks. The
Arduino trademark page (
https://www.arduino.cc/en/Trademark/HomePage) covers how the name may be used for products for sale, but it isn't 100% clear about usage for software libraries. I have
contacted the Arduino trademark team about our project and will update the mailing list when I hear back. It may be necessary for us to explicitly say that our library is "
for Arduino", to be clear that it isn't "by Arduino". Which means we
may end up with a repository like "eclipse/whiskers.forArduino" and naming the project "Eclipse Whiskers Library for Arduino".
I wanted to update everyone on the mailing list with the current status of the repository as it has been about a month since we wanted to start developing this project.
Sincerely,
James Badger
