Re: [wb-dev] Apple Silicon Question

Thank you for the feedback - I have been using the latest release on the M1 Mac for a couple of weeks and it’s noticeably faster now and I really appreciate the work that the WB team have done.

Hi David, you can install WB into Eclipse 22-03 which is available for ARM

I am a developer of Java applications and I use an Intel based MacBook at the moment.

In a few weeks I will be getting a new machine based on the Apple Silicon Chip and I would welcome some help understanding the best approach to take.

First of all - does the WindowBuilder code work with Eclipse (Intel) and Eclipse (arm) or is there a SWT component which is not compatible ?

If I use the Intel version of Eclipse - should I also install the Intel version of Java or would the Apple Silicon (arm) version be a better choice - I assume that Java is Java and the underlying code which the JVM has been coded with is irrelevant (performance not withstanding).

Now I’m not sure how the Apple Rosetta2 works exactly - from my understanding it converts the program from Intel Code to Silicon ARM code when you install it (not at runtime) which makes sense. However how does the OS know when a program is being “installed”. Some of my tools are command line like ANT etc and I effectively just unzip them into a folder.

There are so many unknowns for me and I have to admit its a bit worrying venturing into the dark so if anyone can shed any experience or insight into the Apple M1 world it would be most helpful (any hopefully reassuring).

Dave
